Drummers are an endangered species

One press of a drum machine button and we are gone !
I can not understand why any person would prefer to hear or use synthetic drums, a sound so de-void of any conviction or human feeling.
I've spent my entire life trying to develop a personal style and feel, it is the way I communicate best, is this all in vain ?
If music lovers can not tell the difference between REAL drums and those that are programmed, then my life has meant nothing. Either way, please let drummers breathe and allow us the natural freedom that other musicians and singers take for granted.

PS. My over reaction to all this is my 25 minute solo on the new CD - track 12

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

Cliff, my man, you are the reason i picked up the sticks and became a drummer. I saw you do that trick where you stand up, and hit the hi hats behind your back, and i was hooked. Love your drummin'. And i love the solo on the new cd. I love the whole cd.
I have a question for ya as well... i am sure that i saw you guys play 'live' on Countdown, and i am pretty sure it was the original version of 'bottom of my heart', probably around 1985, i think. Can you confirm that this actually took place plz??!! Thanx!

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

Hi Mick
Got the behind the back high hat trick from my uncle Lew Hoad who played tennis. It was one of his trick shots at the net at Wimbledon under a bit more pressure than me I imagine. I love drumming man, after all these years, they still hold their magic.
The Countdown show was a reality, the kit I played belonged to Ringo Starr when he toured here in the sixties, they were on loan from a friend. It was a real honour to play them, early Ludwigs.
The extensive solo represents freedom of space that a drummer experiences when alone in a room with his drums! LOVE IT

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

Hey thanx for the info Cliff.
I bloody well stay up late when RAGE has their Countdown specials in the hope that i'll see that footage of you guys again!! But alas, i just seem to get Christie Allen all the time! ;-) Perhaps, you can try and secure that footage and put it on your site?
Man, can you give me some more info on the drums you have used over the years... in particular, the white kit you used around the time of Full Frontal Attack & Resurrection, and also the clear kit you use now. ie. brands, sizes etc. I loved the white kit with the massive kick, & basically modelled my set-up on yours from the FFA days.
Also, do you still make snare drums?
Thanx & regards,
Mick

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

Hey Cliff--

Don't lose heart--I can't tell you how glad I stumbled across this site and found you and your brother still making music,

I saw you play as KOTS way back at a place called Toad's Place in New Haven, CT.  I forget who you were playing with--Paul Stanley, maybe?--but whoever it was you blew them off the stage and a key piece of that was your phenomenal drumming.

One of my favorite moments was after the show and my friends and I were starting pull out of the parking lot--I saw you and your brother leaving and I leaned out the window and screamed "I don't wanna die!", and you honored us with a quick drum roll with your hands on the hood of the car.

I saw a ton of live shows back then, but that performance--yours and your brother's especially--really sticks out as being a high point overall.  Keep swingin'.

The Resurrection kit was part of my Drouyn sponsorship, greatest drums ever made. Brisbane Australia made with Queensland maple 6 ply, fittings are all brass, the white kit I love is 14,15,16 & 18 inch toms, 24 & 26 inch bass drums. 8 inch snare big drum sound on Full Frontal Attack and Resurrection - Kings Of The Sun. The Haymans are what I'm playing at present, 12,13,16, 16 toms, 6 snare & 2 x 22 inch bass drums.
There're like toys so much fun. It took me 4 months to bring them back to life! A resurrection in itself, the white kit is my wife, the Haymans my mistress.
The snare drums stopped me putting a screwdriver through my left hand. I'd spent such a long time developing my left hand it started dominating my every beat. So I stabbed myself, well my sub-conscious did. My hand goes numb if I don't warm it up. Anymore info you'll have to wait for my book.

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

Hey guys,

I do believe that drummers are an endangered species because not all people can play drums well. I love listening to the beat of the drums. That's one type of sound I've been listening to stiletto100 when I'm at home. Hope I'll be able to watch your show guys one day to see you play the drums...

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

100% on the new CD Stand Back Cliff.....saw u many times as KOTS in Vict.
The bonus drum solo track is awesome... Moby Dick-ish in its moods.
I have played it to many non-drum savvy friends & they are mesmerised.. ( I am a bassist but love the timeless skin beaters Paice,Bonham,Powell,Moon,Baker,Rudd etc.

Man your timing is amazing - please tour Vict again ( you will be amazed by the KOTS / R&F groundswell down here still ). Music as solid as yours never wains.

Lets get some real rock into Melbourne - Airbourne,Jet,Wolfmother & a host of tribute bands are doin OK we the X factor only KOTS/R&F can bring.

Thanks guys & keep on rockin...I wanna roooooooooooooooooooooooock :-) last 2 minutes is spine tingling

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

You know its coming tommorow. I love how the league switched out a SS game in KC a few weeks back for a game in NE, which I figured only meant they were for sure going to move this game as well, but nope... I guess not. I think everyone would rather look at 10k in Arrowhead vs. 10k in Naperville on ESPN.

Anyways... all complaints about how crappy the game looks on TV tommorow go here and they will be forwarded to the proper authorities.

Thank you.

Drummers in Stained Glass

Just to prove its not just bagpipes and pipers that get to steel the show in the world of Church Art, here are a few select examples of drummers from across the country.

Re: Drummers are an endangered species

I know they were made with no definite species so you could tell them apart from other Funkeys, but what species do you think NPCs such as Mayor Sayso, Dr. Tinker, and Marshall Are? Why?
